Class Formats

1999-2004

Format

  • RealMedia
  • Mimic the classroom; all the benefits of the on-campus experience
  • Cameras for the whiteboard, class and the instructor
  • Do it on my own using mutliple cameras
  • Live class for anyone up at 8 AM
  • Three classes per week is better than two classes

Challenges

  • Mimicking the live classroom
  • Live students and creating a distance version
  • Priority to the live students
  • Remembering to repeat a question or an explanation
  • Audio quality
  • Students were not as responsive
  • Taping might

2004-2008

Format

  • RealMedia to Windows Media Video
  • Continue to mimic the classroom
  • One camera (w/ assistant) the whiteboard, class and the instructor
  • Mic'd instructor (part of the time)
  • No live class
  • Two classes per week (T/H)

Challenges

  • Tuesday/Thursday not enough time
  • Difficult to capture the classroom
  • Continued grading burden
  • Continued priority to the live students
  • Still forgetting to repeat a question or an explanation
  • Audio quality issues (see the sample videos)

 

2008-present

Format

  • Windows Media Video
  • Talking head
  • Distance student is the entire focues (video used
  • M/H schedule (more time to finish)
  • One camera / Two instructors / Teach teaching /
  • Time savings (Team teaching / dynamic developing web space while other teaching)
  • Mic'd instructor (part of the time)
  • No live class

Challenges

  • Concurrent development of the course
  • Minor technology
