Installing Software


The process of installing software from the Internet is essentially the same, regardless of the software source.

Most of the software we will be using today is already installed on your computer. However, the Web Editor program we will be using is not installed. You will need to install it.

Follow the steps below to install Mozilla ...


  1. Browse to Mozilla's web site and locate the download link
  2. When prompted, save the file to your DESKTOP
  3. Once the file downloads, SHOW YOUR DESTOP or minimize your other windows
  4. Locate and double-click on the file you downloaded
  5. Follow the prompts to install, using the suggested defaults
  6. Once the install is complete run Mozilla's web editor to make sure it works
  7. Once you complete this workshop segment, help your neighbor finish
  8. Return to the home page for this workshop

We will be using Audacity as part of our workshop

today. It is already installed on your computer so you will not need to install it. However, it is a tricky install so I have included instructions.

Follow the steps below to install Audacity ...


Downloading the software

  1. Browse to Audacity's site and locate the software download link ...
  2. Click on the "audacity-win.exe" download link to begin the download. If prompted, save the file to the DESKTOP
  3. Once the Audacity download is complete, return to the site and locate the "LAME mp3 encoder" download link
  4. Click on the download link to begin the download. If prompted, save the file to the DESKTOP

Installing the software

  1. SHOW YOUR DESKTOP in order to easily find the downloaded files on your desktop
  2. Double-click the "audacity-win.exe" file to begin the install process
  3. Follow the prompts, accepting the default install options
  4. Locate the "LAME" file that you downloaded
  5. Right-click on the file and choose EXPLORE to view the contents
  6. Select all of theCTRL+A to select all
  7. Copy all of the selected files
  8. Open c:\program files\audacity\
  9. Create a folder called LAME and paste the files into that folder
  10. When running Audcacity and you want to extract the file as an MP3 you will need to help Audacity find the lame.dll file the first time you try it.
