Course Mate and Recording Activity Information

  • Why we have course mates and recording activities.
In order to develop your speaking and listening proficiency you need to speak to and listen to a live person. If you are in a face-to-face class your course mate is the student seated next to you. In this online class you need to make arrangements for a course mate. You are encouraged to spend as much time together as possible preparing activities and assignments, watching the videos, etc. During the semester, with your course mate you complete and submit via MindTap, at a minimum, the ~75 paired activities as assigned in the 24 modules.
  • Where, when and with whom.
Recording activities paare assigned within each module and are due on the module due date. Some of the recording activities are completed by yourself but many of the recording activities need to be done with your course mate. In order to receive credit the multi-student recordings must be recorded with your course mate. All the recordings are submitted via MindTap.
  • Who can be my course mate?
You, the student, are responsible for obtaining and maintaining your course mate. In addition to fellow students enrolled in FLS 101, a family member, friend, co-worker, etc. can serve as your course mate as long as they have full FLS101 proficiency in the language (see Course Objectives). If your course mate is not enrolled in the course, speakerphone interaction will be the typical mode of communication. If your course mate is enrolled in the class you will interact virtually via MindTap.

To contact a fellow student about being your course mate visit the current course mates page for FLS101-601 (or 602), then email one or more students on the list who do not yet have a course mate

  • Course Mate Arrangement Assignment:

Mariachi1. Make arrangements for your course mate per the above instructions. Ensure that your schedules will be compatible.

    2. When prompted in Moodle, enter your course mate's name in the space provided when when completing this activity via Moodle. Entering your course mate's name and submitting is verifying that you have met (virtually or otherwise) with the person, that your schedules are compatible, and that the two of you have have agreed to be course mates for the duration of the course."

    3. Due Date: Before 8 AM on the date indicated in the course schedule.

    4. In order to receive credit for multi-student recordings, the instructors must have your course mate's name and email address on file.

Recording your activities.
The MindTap "Use it!" activities have the recording tool built-in. You are able to make and save multiple recordings for each activity, so be sure that you select the video you want to submit before hitting the final submit button. View this Cengage video to see how this is done. (See below for solutions to recording problems.)
  • My course mate is also taking the class.
If both students are in the class, both of you log in to MindTap at the same time; one student initiates the creation of the group and shares the group ID with the other student. Click on the "tutorial" link in the upper right corner of any of the activities requiring a course mate.
  • My course mate is not taking the class.
If your course mate is NOT taking the course the recording you submit via MindTap for each activity needs to include your voice as well as the voice of your course mate (call your course mate and use your speakerphone). Ideally this is done face-to-face in order to facilitate the recording via MindTap, but you can also use a speaker phone, etc.
  • MindTap connecting difficulties.
Glitches are a part of technology so don't run the risk of not receiving credit by waiting until the last minute to try to complete your activities. If you are having trouble connecting with your course mate via MindTap, try again at a later time. If still unsuccesful, call each other on the phone and turn on the speaker phone setting, then each of you record you and your course mate using the MindTap recording utility (but not the "connect" option), then save the recording and submit the recording via the MindTap utility. Be sure that the recording you produce includes your voice and your course mate's voice.
  • MindTap recording difficulties.
Don't wait until the last minute to try to complete your activities. If you are having trouble getting the MindTap recording utility to work properly review this MindTap video for recording help. If this does not help you resolve the issue, contact MindTap Help via their home page in order to receive help troubleshooting the issue.
  • MindTap submission difficulties.
If both of you are enrolled in the course and everything went fine with connecting and recording, but only one of you is able to submit, then the student who can submit should submit a recording; the student who cannot submit a recording should contact the GTA to alert him/her to the issue so that the course mate's submission can be used to grade the recording.
  • My course mate is not responding.
Occasionally, course mates have difficulty with scheduling and sticking to a specific meeting day/time. If your course mate has missed 2 meeting times, please contact him/her via email and include the instructor on the email in order to determine if these missed times were anomalies or if you need to pursue finding a new course mate. Instructor permission is needed to make any changes to your course mate assignment.
  • I am registered by my email address in MindTap and not my name. My GTA is having troubling finding my work.
