01. When and where will I take the hourly exams?

• The exam dates appear on the syllabus. An expectation sheet is made available at the same time that a chapter's modules are made available. It includes complete time and location information. DELTA proctoring service proctors the exams. If you live within a 50 mile radius of the campus, you take the tests on campus. If you live beyond that radius you work with DELTA Proctoring Service to setup a remote proctor arrangement via Moodle and the Respondus lockdown browser. 02. I have several coursemate / paired-activity questions ...

• A. Will I interact with my course companion on-line or face-to-face? If your course mate is enrolled in the class the interaction will be synchrnous and online and facilitated through Mindtap. If your course mate is not enrolled in the course, then there are at least three options, the first being the simplest and an obvious preference:
• 1. The two of you are physically in the same room doing your work together.
• 2. If it is not possible to meet together to complete the paired activities, you can use the phone for your interaction as long as you use the speaker option as you record your interaction via Mindtap.
• 3. If you have a camera and microphone on your computer, you can interact through the Internet using Google Hangout or Zoom, etc.
• This work will involve a significant amount of verbal interaction. Nearly everything you do with this classmate will be in the target language.
• Your oral proficiency progress is monitored throughout the semester.

• B. Will I be paired automatically or do I need to contact someone? It is your responsibility to contact someone on the Coursemate list who does not have a partner. If you are having difficulty finding a classmate to be your coursemate, consider asking a family member, co-worker, or friend as long as they have at least a 101 knowledge of Spanish and are willing to commit to working with you during the entire semester.

03. I don't have any prior Spanish experience. Can I still take the course?
• FLS101 is for the true beginner. Naturally, as with any other course you take, if you have prior experience with the content the time you will need to dedicate to the course may be less.

04. Can I take the course for "Credit Only"?
• Because FLS101 is probably not a required course for your major you are able to take it for "credit only". However, roughly half of the students who take the course for "credit only" do not end up with the required C- and therefore they must repeat the class. A student may move on to FLS102 with a D- or higher in the course.
  
  
05. I missed the first and second day of class. Can I make up the work?
• You can complete the work for a module up until the module's deadline. You do not earn credit for any work turned in after the deadline.
 
06. Is it possible to complete the modules on campus if I am having trouble with my home computer?
• Yes, you can come to the HSS Language labs (LAU 214 or WI 131), and many other labs if you bring headphones.

07. Why did Mindtap mark my answer as wrong? I know it's right.

• Re-read the instructions for the activity to make sure you are providing the correct Mindtap has been programmed to grade complete Spanish sentences for spelling, punctuation and accent marks, all important elements in the language. Failure to include these elements will result in an incorrect answer. Complete your work carefully and completely. Follow the format in the models.

08. How can I get the proper accents in my e-mail and other work?

09. What would be the usual steps I would follow to complete a day of class?
 
• Review the schedule to see which module you need to complete, along with projects or exams that are coming up.
• Click on the module link for the day. Read and prepare everything via Mindtap as indicated on the module page, learning and prepping, completing and submitting textook activities, watching the associated videos. Follow the order indicated. Participate in the Mindtap activities by listening, speaking, and responding. Complete the paired activities with your course mate.

10. What happens if my course mate is a slacker or drops the course halfway through the semester?

• It is the student's responsibility to maintain the coursemate relationship. After a second missed appointment please e-mail your coursemate and include profesora Despain's e-mail in the cc: line. Indicate in the e-mail that you will pursue finding a new coursemate who is as equally motivated and available to complete the activities. If behavior does not change and it becomes necessary to follow through arrange with a family member, co-worker, neighbor or friend who has at least a 101 knowledge of Spanish and who is willing to work with you through the rest of the semester. E-mail this new agreement, name and e-mail to profesora Despain jhdespai@ncsu.edu. New arrangements should be worked out as soon as possible so that you do not miss submitting assignments. The two lowest paired activity scores are dropped to help alleviate negative consequences with challenging situations.
