  • History is not a trivia contest. It is not about memorizing dates, battles, and places. It is about understanding and explaining why things happened as they did. In college-level work, you NEVER cite basic reference works, tertiary sources like dictionaries or encyclopedias. However, to fill in basic knowledge gaps, you may wish to consult such low-level references. [Even history professors don't memorize everything!]
