Students become familiar with the orthographical problems and solutions of the language, and learn to better relate the sounds of the language to what they write. Students learn to transcribe phonetically, and describe the language at an alophonic level in order to be able to represent and describe how individual speakers pronounce the language, to better understand which sounds are and are not found in the spoken language, as well as to obtain the necessary tools to help others improve their own pronunciation. Finally, students are able to focus on and improve their particular pronunciation problems, as well conduct an in-depth analysis of the geolect of a specific Hispanic country.
