head Shot of Dr. Valerie Wust

Welcome to my website...

I am an assistant professor of French in the Department of Foreign Languages and literatures. My responsibilities within the department revolve around French language and linguistics, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I am also a graduate advisor for our French M.A. program.

New T.A. Orientation: Fall 2009

Activity 1: NC State Web Presence

Activity 2: Course Objectives, Lesson Planning and Communicative Language Teaching

Education

I was educated in Canada, receiving a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, a Master's degree in Applied linguistics and a Ph.D. in French Language, literatures and linguistics from the University of Alberta.

Research

My current research program examines the acquisition of pronominalization by classroom learners of L2 French in the Canadian context. I am particularly interested in whether or not the low frequency of clitics in production reflects difficulties in processing these forms in listening comprehension, as is evidenced through translation, cloze, and dictogloss tasks.

I am also examing the effect of sequencing on the acquisition of the French passé composé and imparfait by high school-level L2 learners of French in the United States. Results of the pilot phase of the project show improved student performance on sentence preference and written cloze measures when learners are first presented with the less syntactically complex form (the passé composé).

Besides my doctoral dissertation on the acquisition of clitic pronouns, I've also published and given conference presentations on topics such as: second language acquisition, sociolinguistic variation, French Immersion discourse, and the teaching of culture in the L2 classroom.

Teaching

During Fall 2009 semester, I will be teaching a graduate seminar in FL Teaching Methods, as well as 2nd semester French. I will be on a research leave from January-August 2010.
