Beginning in 1865, the United States underwent profound social, political, and economic change.  With

the Civil War behind them, settlement westward resumed.  Within a few short years, the slow paced, agrarian

society of the prewar years was transformed into a bustling, modern, industrial state.

By 1900, America was beginning to look much as it looks today.
