Beginning in 1865, the United States underwent profound social, political, and economic change.  With

the Civil War behind them, settlement westward resumed.  Within a few short years, the slow paced, agrarian

society of the prewar years was transformed into a bustling, modern, industrial state.

By 1900, America was beginning to look much as it looks today. But questions of economic and social inequities, of the impact of technology, and of social progress remain central to the complex, pluralistic society of today.
