Exploring ArcMap and ArcCatalog

Homework

Note: Mostly the textbook exercises are self-explanatory. In this and subsequent homework pages, points are listed only to supplement or correct textbook descriptions. Where it says "Show:" you will reproduce the given result in class, to be checked off by the instructor. Write your name on a blank sheet of paper, then write a column with "3a," "3b," and "3c." The instructor will initial each homework "Show" assignment after you have completed it (raise your hand to show you are done, if necessary).

  • Warning: ArcGIS wants to write files to disk. At home there should be no issue about your rights to do so. In the lab, however, you may need to specify your own workspace on the C:/ drive. Point file saves to C:\Documents and Settings\your_unity_id\Localsettings\temp\.

  • Hands-on Exercises from Textbook
    1. Ormsby Exercise 3a: Displaying Map Data, pp. 22-33.
      • p. 24: If the Table of Contents is not showing when you load ex03a.mxd, select Window, Table of Contents.
      • p. 29: If your toolbar is vertical and you want it horizontal as shown on this page, simply stretch it horizontally by grabbing one of its sides (not corners as the textbook states).
      • Show: Labeled flight path as shown on p. 33.
    2. Exercise 3b: Navigating a Map, pp. 34-42
      • Show: Report your segment line length from use of the Measure Tool as shown on p. 42. This will differ a bit from what is in the textbook. The line will disappear, but you can report the segment length. Go to Layout, and enter this length using Insert, Text. The text box will be too small in all likelihood. Double-click on it to bring up its Properties box, then click on Change Symbol and make the text size larger (ex., 18).
    3. Exercise 3c: Looking at Feature Attributes, pp. 43-51
      • Show: Statistics Box, p. 50. You cannot print this without using a third-party screen capture utility such as Screen Print & Capture, available free from www.download.com and other sources. If you do not have this, Control-PrintScrn should copy the screen to the Windows clipboard, from where you can paste it into Word and print it.
  • Be prepared to answer the following questions from the textbook.

  • Hands-on Exercises from Textbook
    1. Ormsby Exercise 4a: Browsing Map Data
      • Note that the Windows Explorer-like window listing the files on the left of ArcCatalog is the "catalog tree" and the main display area on the right is the "catalog display."
      • Work through the exercise and at the end, show the coordinate system information for this map of the world. Right click and Print; or Right click, Select all, then right click again, Copy, and paste to Word.

    2. Ormsby Exercise 4b: Searching for Map Data
      • Work through the exercise and near the end, show the seafloor layer with one point's elevation identified as at the bottom of p. 72. You cannot print this without using a third-party screen capture utility such as ScreenPrint32, available free from www.download.com and other sources. If you do not have this, Control-PrintScrn should copy the screen to the Windows clipboard, from where you can paste it into Word and print it.

    3. Ormsby Exercise 4c: Adding Data to ArcMap
      • To do the dragging of flight_diverge.lyr that is discussed on pp. 76-77, you cannot have ArcCatalog in Full Screen view but must instead make this a window less than full screen.
      • Work through the exercise and near the end, show the layout view with both data frames visible, as shown at the top of p. 85.

  • Be prepared to answer the following questions from the textbook.
