Graduate Student Conference

Travel Awards

Beginning with the 2010 SHEAR meeting in Rochester, New York, SHEAR will offer assistance with conference travel for graduate students who have papers accepted for inclusion in the annual meeting program. Six grants of $250 each will be given annually. In addition, each award grant recipient will have his or her conference registration fee waived. All currently-enrolled Ph.D. students who have had papers accepted for the meeting may apply for the awards by submitting a short application, a copy of the conference presentation abstract, and a c.v. Proof of current enrollment will be required.


Selection will be based primarily on the merit of the planned presentation. No student may win more than
one award during the tenure of his or her graduate program. Award decisions will be made by a 3-person
subcommittee of the conference program committee, headed by the program committee chair.

Eligibility Requirements
• Applicants must have a paper accepted for inclusion in the program of the SHEAR annual meeting for
which they seek an award.
• The paper abstract must be of exceptional quality.
• Applicants must be currently-enrolled PhD students.
• Applicants must not have received a SHEAR conference award in the past.

Conditions of Award
• Notification will be sent to award winners by March 1, 2010.
• Recipients are required to be members of SHEAR.
• Travel grant checks will be presented upon check-in at the conference registration desk.

Displaying Books for SHEAR Members

Any SHEAR members interested in having their books displayed at the 2010 SHEAR Conference should contact their publishers by July 1, 2010.  Please keep in mind that the publishers pay a fee to display and may not have the marketing budget necessary to honor all requests, particularly for older titles. We ask that books be appropriate to the meeting and published in the last five years. Please note that SHEAR displays on behalf of publishers and ALL requests must be made by the publisher, not the author.  Therefore, you are encouraged to contact your publisher as soon as possible by July 1, 2010, to check on whether or not your publisher will reserve your title.  Please contact your publisher directly--do not call SHEAR.
